The Rider On A White Horse
The final similarity between the Antichrist and the Mahdi that we will discuss in this chapter is the fact that both the Antichrist and the Mahdi are identified with a biblical passage that describes a rider on a white horse. While this could be literal, it is most probably a symbolic picture of the two men. The amazing thing is that the origin of the biblical tradition of the Antichrist on a white horse and the origin of the Islamic tradition of the Mahdi on a white horse are both attributed to the same passage in the Bible.
The basis for the symbolic picture of both the Antichrist and the Mahdi on a white horse is the sixth chapter of the Book of Revelation. Here the Apostle John is describing his vision of the release of the events that mark the beginning of the end-times. The picture is of Jesus holding a scroll - on the outside of the scroll are seven wax seals. As each seal is broken a specific and distinct end-time event is released:
I watched as the Lamb (Jesus) opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest. Revelation 6:1-2
The seals that follow this rider are:
1. Peace is taken from the earth
3. Plagues and death
4. Persecution and Martyrdom of God’s people
5. A great earthquake
6. The wrath of God
So we see that after the rider appears on the scene, the world essentially freefalls into the chaos that defines the Last Hour. The interpretation that many Bible scholars apply to this passage is thus:
The rider is given a white horse, which is an attempt to be an imitation of the white horse that Jesus is said to ride when He returns (Revelation 19:11). Thus the rider is an imitation Christ, an imposter - an Antichrist. The bow (without any arrows) that the rider carries is a false peace. The rider is pictured as one who emerges carrying with his rise to power a false promise of peace. This is in alignment with and may be a direct reference to the false peace treaty that Antichrist makes with Israel at the start of the seven-year period of his rule. The crown on his head is obviously a reference to the position of authority and leadership that will be given to him. And we see that the true motivation and bent of the rider is to conquer. In light of the identity and activity of the rider then, we are not surprised to find out that the events that follow his emergence onto the world scene are not in keeping with an age of peace, but rather an age of apocalyptic chaos. Apparently this is not a problem for the Islamic scholars who generally adopt a very arbitrary pick and choose approach to the Bible. For in seeing the Antichrist on the white horse with a crown and conquering, Muslim scholars see a clear picture of the Mahdi. As mentioned in the earlier chapter on the Mahdi, the early Muslim transmitter of Hadith, Ka’b al Ahbar is quoted as saying:
I find the Mahdi recorded in the books of the Prophets… For instance, the Book of Revelation says: “And I saw and behold a white horse. He that sat on him…went forth conquering and to conquer.” 16
So in conclusion, we see that several of the most unique and distinguishing aspects of the biblical Antichrist’s person, mission and actions are matched to quite an amazing degree by the descriptions of the Mahdi as found in the Islamic traditions. And now, even further, we see that Muslim scholars actually apply Bible verses about the Antichrist to their awaited savior, the Mahdi. This must be seen as quite ironic, if not entirely prophetic.
Changing The Laws And The Times
Another of the Antichrist’s goals according to the Book of Daniel is said to be that he will “try to change the set times and the laws”:
He will speak against the Most High and oppress his saints and try to change the set times and the laws. The saints will be handed over to him for a time, times and half a time. Daniel 7:25
This is actually quite a big hint into the person of the Antichrist. For by his actions, we see a hint of his origin. It is said that he will desire to change two things; times and laws. Now we have already seen that the Mahdi will change the law by instituting the Islamic Shariah law all over the earth, but we have not seen any evidence in Islamic apocalyptic literature of him changing the “times.” The simple question however is, who else other than a Muslim would desire to change the “times and laws”? Besides the Gregorian calendar used by the West, there is also a Jewish, a Hindu and a Muslim calendar among others. Jews or Hindus however are not a people who would desire to impose their religious laws or calendars onto the rest of the world. Islam however, does have both its own laws and its own calendar, both of which it would desire to impose onto the entire world. The Islamic calendar is based on the career of Muhammad. It begins at the migration (Hijra) of Muhammad from Mecca to Medina. The Muslim calender is viewed as being mandatory for all to observe. Dr. Waleed Mahanna, articulates the Islamic position regarding the Islamic “Hijra” Calendar:
It is considered a divine command to use a (Hijra) calendar with 12 (purely) lunar months without intercalation, as evident from… the Holy Qur'an. 15
Not only does Islam view as a divine imperative the use of a unique religious calendar, it also has its own week. Unlike the western rhythm of a week; Monday through Friday being the body of the workweek followed by Saturday and Sunday as the weekend with Judaism and Christianity using these two days for their respective days of worship, Islam holds Friday as its sacred day of prayer. This is the day that Muslims meet at the Mosque to pray and listen to a sermon.
Thus it quite plausible that the biblical reference to the Antichrist who will “try to change the set times and the laws” is a Muslim. As we look at the full picture, only Islam fits the bill of a system that has its own unique calendar and week based on its own religious history and a clear system of law that it wishes to impose onto the entire earth. Surely if a Muslim ever emerges who is as powerful as the Mahdi is described as being, then he will certainly attempt to institute both the Islamic Law worldwide, and the Islamic calendar and week as well.
The Mahdi’s Seven Year Treaty
Again, similarly the Mahdi is said to be one who will initiate Islam’s fourth and final treaty between “the Romans” and the Muslims. (Again, Romans should be interpreted as Christians or the West in general – the executioners of Nicholas Berg in their pre-execution statement addressed President Bush as, “You, O dog of the Romans”) Interestingly enough, this fourth treaty is said to be made with a descendant of Moses’ brother Aaron the Priest. Such a descendant would be a Cohanim. That is to say, he would be a priest. Only Cohanim are allowed among Jews to officiate the priestly duties of the Temple. This is important in light of the fact that many Christian prophecy teachers and theologians have speculated that the treaty that the Antichrist will initiate with Israel will include an agreement to allow the Jews to re-build their Temple. But probably the most amazing aspect of this treaty that the Mahdi makes with this Jew of priestly lineage is its time frame. The specific time frame given for the treaty is exactly the same as the Antichrist’s peace treaty - seven years! Citing Hadith which speak of the Mahdi’s emergence and rule, Muhammad Ali ibn Zubair relates this amazing tradition:
The Prophet said: There will be four peace agreements between you and the Romans. The fourth will be mediated through a person who will be from the progeny of Hadrat Aaron (Honorable Aaron, the brother of Moses) and will be upheld for seven years. The people asked, “O Prophet Muhammad, who will be the imam (leader) of the people at that time?” The Prophet said: He will be from my progeny and will be exactly forty years of age. His face will shine like a star... 14
The Antichrist’s Seven Year Treaty With Israel
After rising to power, and as a prelude to his invasion of Israel, the Antichrist is said to initiate a treaty with the nation of Israel for seven years.
He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven.' In the middle of the 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on a wing of the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him. Daniel 9:27
In context, this verse shows us that the Antichrist will establish a “covenant” with Israel for seven years. The specific Hebrew word used in this verse that is translated merely as “seven” is shabuwa. It literally means a week, but can mean either a “week” of days or years. In Hebrew thought, a seven-year period is similar to our decade. We in the West tend to measure years through a decimal system based of increments of tens, while we measure days in terms of seven (a week). The Hebrews measured both days and years in increments of seven. The word translated as “seven” in Daniel 9:27 is referring to seven years. This is the specific amount of time that the Antichrist will set for his peace treaty with Israel. Then, in the middle of the seven years, the Antichrist will renege on his treaty and stop the offerings and sacrifices in the Jewish Temple and then he will proclaim himself to be not only the ruler of the world, but also God himself. Isaiah the Prophet makes mention of this “covenant” and rebukes Israel for making it: He actually refers to it as a “covenant with death” (Isaiah 28: 14-15). In this covenant, the Israelis find a false sense of security.
The Mahdi’s Attack Of Jerusalem And The Establishment of the Islamic Caliphate From Jerusalem
Likewise the Mahdi is said to attack Jerusalem and re-conquer it for Islam in order that the new Islamic rule over the earth will be established from Jerusalem:
"(Armies carrying) black flags will come from Khurasan (Iran). No power will be able to stop them and they will finally reach Eela (Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem) where they will erect their flags." 11
Jerusalem will be the location of the rightly guided caliphate and the center of Islamic rule, which will be headed by Imam al- Mahdi 12
Also, as we just saw in the section above, the Mahdi will not end his campaign against Jerusalem in a peaceful way. For the Jews, the Islamic version of the last-days ends with the last few surviving Jews hiding behinds rocks or trees from the sword of Islam. The military campaign against Jerusalem and the establishment of the Islamic caliphate there likewise will not result in a benevolent rule over the Jews by the Mahdi, for as we have already seen, the last quote above continues:
…That will abolish the leadership of the Jews… and put an end to the domination of the Satans who spit evil into people and cause corruption in the earth. 13
In relation to the above attack against the inhabitants of Israel, there is quite interestingly, another very specific correlation between the actions of the Mahdi and the actions of the biblical Antichrist. While the similarities between the Antichrist and the Mahdi that we have already discussed are quite astonishing, I believe that the specificity of this next parallel is just simply incredible.
A Military Attack Against Israel And The Establishment Of The Temple Mount As The Seat Of Authority.
The Bible teaches that The Antichrist, with his multi-nation coalition will attack Israel, and specifically Jerusalem to conquer it:
I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people (who submit to Antichrist’s rule) will not be taken from the city. Zechariah 14:2
"You (Gog - Ezekiel’s name for the Antichrist) will go up, you will come like a storm; you will be like a cloud covering the land, you and all your troops, and many peoples with you." 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "It will come about on that day, that thoughts will come into your mind and you will devise an evil plan, and you will say, 'I will go up against the land of unwalled villages. I will go against those who are at rest, that live securely, all of them living without walls and having no bars or gates, to capture spoil and to seize plunder, to turn your hand against the waste places which are now inhabited, and against the people (Israelites) who are gathered from the nations, who have acquired cattle and goods, who live at the center of the world. Ezekiel 38:9-12 NASB
According to the Bible, after this attack, the Antichrist will specifically set up his “throne” in “God’s Temple”. The Apostle Paul lays this out quite clearly:
He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God. 2 Thessalonians 2:4
The location of the Jewish Temple has always been on Mt. Moriah in Jerusalem. Today, the Temple that once stood on Mt. Moriah does not exist; it was destroyed by the Roman Emporer Titus in 70 A.D. according to the prophecy of Jesus:
Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. "Do you see all these things?" he asked. "I tell you the truth, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down." Matthew 24:1,2
Today, Mt. Moriah, sometimes known as the Temple Mount or in Arabic as Haram Ash-Sharif, is the location of two Mosques and is considered to be the third holiest site of Islam. There is endless speculation about the Temple Mount regarding issues such as exactly where the Jewish Temple once was located on the Mount or whether or not there will be a Jewish Temple rebuilt there in the future. Based on the above verse from the Apostle Paul, it certainly seems to indicate that there will indeed be a rebuilt Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. The Apostle Paul says that the Antichrist will “set himself up in God’s Temple,” or more literally, “he takes his seat in the temple of God”. This speaks not so much of a literal sitting down as it does of a taking a position of authority. Thus we see that the Antichrist will make Mt. Moriah, and more specifically, the rebuilt Jewish Temple, the specific location of his rule. Jesus warned of this event two thousand years ago. Referring to the Antichrist having set himself up in the Jewish Temple, and the events that will immediately follow, Jesus said:
"So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel--let the reader understand-- then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the roof of his house go down to take anything out of the house. Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now--and never to be equaled again. If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. Matthew 24:16-22
Here we see Jesus referring to the Antichrist’s occupancy of the temple as, “the abomination that causes desolation.” The desolation is a reference to the chaos and severe persecution against the Jews and Christians that will immediately follow when the Antichrist’s true identity is revealed. After his military campaign against Jerusalem, the Antichrist will make his base of authority, the Temple Mount itself. At this time, it is clear that the Antichrist’s malevolent feelings toward Israel will become fully manifest. So much so that Jesus warns the inhabitants of Jerusalem to straight away flee to the mountains.
The Mahdi’s Targeted Campaign Against Jews And Christians
Interestingly enough, Islamic tradition speaks much of the Mahdi’s special calling to convert Christians and Jews to Islam, yet speaks very little specifically of conversions from other faiths. It seems as though converting Christians and Jews to Islam will be the primary evangelistic thrust of the Mahdi. The following quote from Ayatollah Ibrahim Amini clearly articulates this vision:
The Mahdi will offer the religion of Islam to the Jews and Christians; if they accept it they will be spared, otherwise they will be killed. 9
And of course we cannot forget the infamous Hadith that has become a favorite of many Muslim anti-Semites. Again, note that it is speaking specifically about “The last hour”:
The last hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Jews and the Muslims would kill them until the Jews would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him; but the tree Gharqad would not say, for it is the tree of the Jews. 10
After commenting on this particlar Hadith, several Muslim authors will be quick to point out the very “interesting” fact that this particular tree, “the Gharqad” (apparently the boxwood tree) is presently being planted in abundance by Jews in Israel. The point is that this final holocaust is expected by Muslims to take place within the present state of Israel. This of course corresponds to another very specific similarity between the biblical Antichrist and the Mahdi.
The Antichrist’s Targeted Campaign Against Jews And Christians
The Bible is very clear that Satan, through the Antichrist, will specifically target first Jews, and then Christians for death. In the Book of Revelation, chapter twelve and thirteen, we read another prophetic passage of Scripture that is rich with symbolic language. Initially it is slightly difficult to understand, but after the symbols are explained, it becomes very clear:
A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. (Revelation 12:1)
The “woman” symbolically pictured here is the family or nation of Israel, the Jewish people. We see that she is crowned with twelve stars. This represents the twelve sons of Israel who became the twelve tribes that make up the family or the nation of Israel (Genesis 35:23-26).
She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on his heads. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that he might devour her child the moment it was born. She gave birth to a son, a male child, who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter. And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne. (Revelation 12:2-5)
The woman - Israel becomes pregnant and gives birth to a “man child, who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter”. This is a clear reference to Jesus the Jewish Messiah (See Psalm 2:9). The Dragon mentioned here is identified in verse 9 as, “that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray.” We see that Satan desires to kill Jesus, but instead Jesus is, “snatched up to God and to his throne.” This is a reference to Jesus’ ascension to heaven after the resurrection (Acts 1:8). After this:
The great dragon was hurled down--that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him…He (The Dragon) pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child… The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the desert, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent's reach. Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring--those who obey God's commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus. Revelation 12:1-6,9,13,14,17
We see that Satan is, “enraged at the woman (Israel) and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring--those who obey God's commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus.” Israel’s “other offspring” are those Christians who indeed “obey God's commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus.” This is the only passage that makes specific reference to Satan making a direct target of both Jews and Christians together. And we know that this passage is speaking specifically of the end-times, because it mentions twice the three and a half year period (1260 days and “a time, times and half a time”) that the Antichrist will have authority to war against the saints:
The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months. He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. He was given power to make war against the saints and to conquer them. And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. Revelation 13:5-7
The prophet Daniel also saw that the Antichrist would have this authority to wage a successful war against “the saints”. Saints is also translated as “holy ones” in some translations. It speaks primarily of the true followers of Jesus who know and serve the One True God.
He will speak against the Most High and oppress his saints and try to change the set times and the laws. The saints will be handed over to him for a time, times and half a time. Daniel 7:25
Again here we see the reference to the three and a half year period that Antichrist will persecute those who resist him.
The Bible is clear then, the Antichrist will specifically target those who resist his attempts to establish his religion all over the earth. From the book of Revelation as well as the Prophet Daniel, we see that the two groups that Satan is most enraged against are the Jews and the Christians.
The Mahdi As A Spiritual World Leader
Likewise, it almost goes without saying, the Mahdi of Islam will also be the leader a worldwide worship movement. It will be a worship movement that will seek to cause anyone who practices any religion other than Islam to renounce their faith and worship Allah, the god of Islam. As we saw in the last chapter, the Mahdi, “will govern the people by the Sunnah of their Prophet and establish Islam on Earth.” 2 And, “Islam will be victorious over all the religions.” 3
Thus we see that the Mahdi is the leader of a world revolution that will institute a “new world order” that will be based on the religion of Islam. Islam will be the only religion that will be allowed to be practiced. Both the Antichrist and the Mahdi are said to be the unqualified leaders of a global religious movement that will draw worship away from the God of the Bible and His Son Jesus Christ. As we will see clearly in later chapters, inherent in the worship of Allah within the context of Islam is a direct denial of the God of the Bible and His Son Jesus Christ. In fact, this is the reason that some Muslims feel so strongly as to say that the Mahdi will, “eradicate those pigs and dogs” – the Christians and the Jews who refuse to convert to Islam. Which leads us to the next obvious similarity between the Antichrist and the Mahdi.
The Antichrist As A Spiritual World Leader
The Bible establishes the fact that the Antichrist will be a spiritual leader whose authority will be acknowledged worldwide. After examining the Antichrist’s role as a universal religious leader, many Bible prophecy teachers have talked about the coming of the “One World Religion” or “the false church” which the Antichrist will both create and enforce upon the entire earth. This concept of a coming dominant and demonically inspired world religion is partly arrived at due to the frequent references to worship that are associated with the Antichrist throughout Scripture. In the Book of Revelation we read that the Antichrist will both inspire and demand worship. This worship will be directed at both Satan, who is referred to as “the dragon” and the Antichrist who is referred to as “the beast”:
Men worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, "Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?"… All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast–all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world. Revelation 13:4,8
Beyond the fact that the Antichrist establishes a worldwide worship movement, another reason to see him as a spiritual world leader is because the Bible says he will be assisted by a man whom it refers to as “The False Prophet.” Of course, the very title, False Prophet, assumes the religious nature of this man. One of the primary roles of the False Prophet is to specifically perform deceptive “signs and wonders” that will help persuade the inhabitants of the earth to worship the Antichrist/Beast:
But the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who had performed the miraculous signs on his behalf. Revelation 19:20
It is clear then, the Bible teaches that the Antichrist will be the leader of a worldwide religious worship movement that will attempt to displace and usurp worship from the God of the Bible. This worship will then be directed toward both himself and to Satan - the invisible spirit – the provocateur and puppet master that motivates, empowers and gives authority to the Antichrist to accomplish his worldwide task.
The Mahdi As World Ruler
As we have seen from the Islamic traditions and Muslim scholars, the Mahdi, like the Antichrist, is also prophesied to be a political and military world leader unparalleled by any other throughout world history. The Mahdi is said to “fight against the forces of evil, lead a world revolution and set up a new world order based on justice, righteousness and virtue.” 1 At this time, according to Islamic tradition, the Mahdi is said to preside over the entire earth as the final Caliph of Islam. And of course as we saw in the last chapter, the Muslims will, “take the world administration in their hands and Islam will be victorious over all the religions.” Without question, Islam views the Mahdi as one whose rule will extend over all of the earth. Clearly then, we see that the Antichrist and the Mahdi are both described as being political and military leaders the likes of which the world has never before seen. While many powerful leaders have arisen throughout world history, the descriptions given concerning both the Antichrist and the Mahdi surpass any that have yet arisen. But the Mahdi and the Antichrist are both described as being more than merely political and military leaders. They are both viewed as being supreme religious leaders as well.
A Powerful Political And Military World Leader.
From the Bible, we learn that in the last-days, the Antichrist will emerge as a man who will lead a very powerful world empire the likes of which history has yet to produce. This powerful leadership role of the Antichrist is first described clearly in the Bible by the prophet Daniel. In the Book of Daniel, in the seventh chapter, we find Daniel describing a vision of four very bizarre and gruesome “beasts”. After describing the first three beasts, Daniel says this of the fourth:
After that, in my vision at night I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast-terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns. While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like the eyes of a man and a mouth that spoke boastfully. Daniel 7:7,8
Then, in verses 15-16, Daniel asks an angel in his vision to explain the interpretation of the vision of the four beasts. The angel explains that the four beasts represent four very great kingdoms or empires:
I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me. I approached one of those standing there and asked him the true meaning of all this. So he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things: The four great beasts are four kingdoms that will rise from the earth. Daniel 7:15-17
It’s actually pretty straightforward. Daniel again asks the angel specifically about the fourth beast, and in particular about the “little horn” that uprooted three horns. The angel again responds with a very direct and clear explanation:
He gave me this explanation: The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it. The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings. Daniel 7: 23,24
Essentially, the angel explains that the fourth kingdom will be an empire that will cause great destruction to the whole earth. Initially, this kingdom will consist of ten kings. Then another king, an eleventh, will arise and will displace three of the previous kings. This eleventh king is the Antichrist first referred to as “the little horn”. Thus we see that based on the vision that Daniel was given, the Antichrist is a future king who will first gain control over three other kingdoms or nations, and eventually over ten, thus forming his future ten nation “Beast” empire. It will be an empire of unparalleled power and ferocity, which will “devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it”.
In the last part of Daniel, chapter seven, the angel describes to Daniel the actions of this king as well as his end:
He will speak against the Most High and oppress his saints and try to change the set times and the laws. The saints will be handed over to him for a time, times and half a time. But the court will sit, and his power will be taken away and completely destroyed forever. Daniel 7:25-27
The king is said to oppress the saints of God for a period of time that most Bible scholars agree is three and a half years (a time, times and half a time). But eventually his dominion will be taken away, and replaced by the Kingdom of “The Most High” God.
Three hundred years later, in the Book of Revelation, the Apostle John likewise describes the Antichrist and his “beast” empire in very similar terms:
And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. He had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on his horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority… Men worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, "Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?"
All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast--all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world. Revelation 13:2,4-8
While the symbolic language here is fairly thick, if we understand the biblical usage of particular symbolic terms, then the picture is actually quite clear. The “beast,” again refers to the Antichrist who is a king over a ten-nation empire. The horns represent authority and power. Ten horns speak of both an extremely high degree of authority as well as the number of nations and their kings that will unite to form the beast’s kingdom. The “dragon” who gives the beast his authority is Satan. Satan is often spoken of in the Bible as a dragon or a serpent. The global impact of this beast-like empire is made clear by the phrase: “And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.” We see the specific question that the people of the earth ask is, "Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?" It appears to those on the earth that the beast is absolutely beyond challenge. And again, we see the same specific period of time that was given to the beast to persecute the God’s people as forty-two months. Forty-two months is three and a half years. This same time frame was given in the previously cited passage of Daniel 7:25.
Thus, we have seen that the Bible prophecies that the Antichrist will be a political and military leader whose power will be unparalleled by any other world leader throughout history.
Comparing The Biblical Antichrist And The Mahdi
Most people who haven’t even read the Bible have heard of the man known popularly as “The Antichrist.” Simply put, according to the Bible, the Antichrist will be Satan’s primary human agent on the earth in the last-days. Interestingly, in the Bible, the Antichrist is actually only referred to once by that specific name (1 John 2:18). Using other names however, there are numerous references to the Antichrist found throughout the Bible. Some of the various names that Scripture assigns to the Antichrist are “the Beast” (Revelation 13:4), “the abomination that causes desolation” (Matthew 24:15), “the desolator” (Daniel 9:27), “the man of sin,” “the man of lawlessness,” “the son of destruction” (2 Thessalonians 2) “the little horn” (Daniel 7:8), “the Assyrian” (Micah 5:5, Isaiah 10:5,14:25), “the oppressor’, “the king of Babylon” (Isaiah 14) and even the mysterious “Gog” (Ezekiel 38:1, Revelation 20:7). There are several other names that Scripture uses to refer to the Antichrist as well.
But beyond all of his unusual names, who exactly is the Antichrist? In this chapter we will review a few of the primary descriptions and actions that define just who the Antichrist is according to the Bible. Our examination will also focus on several very specific similarities between the Antichrist and the Mahdi.
Bible Prophecies about the Mahdi
There are several End Times prophecies about the Mahdi in the Bible. The following are 4 of these prophecies:
A. In Roman 11:26 and Isaiah 59:20, the Bible prophesies the coming of a Deliverer (Redeemer, Saviour, or Liberator) from Sion. This man is most likely the Mahdi:
And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: (Roman 11:26) (American King James Version)
The Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their sins," declares the LORD. (Isaiah 59:20) (New International Version)
B. In Genesis 49:10, the Bible prophesies the coming of an important person, who could be either Prophet Mohammad (p) or the Mahdi:
The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs and the obedience of the nations is his. (Genesis 49:10) [ Source: New International Version 1984 (Protestant Bible) ]
The scepter from Judah and the leader from his thigh will not be taken away, until he who will be sent arrives, and he will be the expectation of Gentiles. (Genesis 49:10) [ Source: The Sacred Bible (Catholic Bible) ]
The specter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. (Genesis 49:10) [ Source: King James Bible (Protestant Bible) ]
C. The Mahdi is prophesied in Daniel 10 & Daniel 12 of the Bible and the Mahdi is referred to as Michael:
In Daniel 10: 20-21:
20 So he said, "Do you know why I have come to you? Soon I will return to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I go, the prince of Greece will come;
21 but first I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth. No one supports me against them except Michael, your prince.
In Daniel 12: 1-11:
1 "At that time, Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time, your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered.
2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.
3 Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.
4 But you, Daniel, close up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge."
5 Then I, Daniel, looked, and there before me stood two others, one on this bank of the river and one on the opposite bank.
6 One of them said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, "How long will it be before these astonishing things are fulfilled?"
7 The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard him swear by him who lives forever, saying, "It will be for a time, times and half a time (a year, two years and half a year). When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed."
8 I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, "My lord, what will the outcome of all this be?"
9 He replied, "Go your way, Daniel, because the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end.
10 Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.
11 "From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days.
12 Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days.
D. The following is a biblical End of Time prophecy about the Mahdi in Isaiah 19: 16-25 :
16In that day shall Egypt be like unto women: and it shall be afraid and fear because of the shaking of the hand of the LORD of hosts, which he shaketh over it.
17And the land of Judah (meaning Israel) will bring terror to the Egyptians; everyone to whom Judah is mentioned will be terrified, because of what the LORD Almighty is planning against them.
18In that day shall five cities in the land of Egypt speak the language of Canaan, and swear to the LORD of hosts; one shall be called, the City of Destruction (some manuscripts of the Bible mention Heliopolis or City of the Sun).
19In that day shall there be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof to the LORD.
20And it shall be for a sign and for a witness unto the LORD Almighty in the land of Egypt: for they shall cry unto the LORD because of the oppressors, and he shall send them a Saviour, and a great one, and he shall deliver them.
21And the LORD shall be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know the LORD in that day, and shall do sacrifice and oblation; yea, they shall vow a vow unto the LORD, and perform it.
22And the LORD shall smite Egypt: he shall smite and heal it: and they shall return even to the LORD, and he shall respond to their pleas and heal them.
23In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians.
24In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land:
25Whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance.
Shiite Muslim (minority Muslims) view:
*Mahdi will be descendant of Prophet Muhammad pbuh
*Born inIraq in the year 255 AH (Islamic lunar calendar),
*He is still alive, centuries old, and in occultation, and will reappear
*He is the awaited 12th imam the Shiite Muslims (Shiite Muslims believe that there is only 12 Rightly Guided Imams–divinely appointed)
*Mahdi is most pious, just, learned of all people
*Mahdi will reappear inMecca and will organize world-wide revolution for justice
*He will precede Jesus’ pbuh Second Coming
* Will fight Dajjal (Anti-Christ) and will be helped by Jesus pbuh
* Mahdi will be martyred and will die. When this happens all people will die, and the Judgment Day will begin.
As you can see, the beliefs are different. Now, what does the Holy Bible say about the Anti-Christ? Here is a short description:
*Man of sin and son of perdition, lawless
*Might be ex-Jew (” Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers..” )
*Great military leader
*Will be a great orator
*He will have a false prophet with him to promote him
*Opposed to Jesus’ teachings and God
*Will claim to be divine and will demand worship
*Anyone who does not believe him divine and does not worship him will be attacked/killed
*Will have a mark and will demand that everyone be marked
*Will make pact withIsrael, but will break it and will attack the Jews of Israel
*Will have Solomon’sTemplerebuilt
*Will be one of the 10 kings
*He will appear to be resurrected from dead, as part of his miracle after being wounded in the head
*He could be gay, as he will not have desire for women
*Will conquer through treaties and wars
*He will be very popular around the world
*He will rise to power over 3, then later 10 nations
Sunni Muslim (majority Muslims) view:
*Imam Muhammad Mahdi will be a descendant of Prophet Muhammad pbuh.
*Has not yet been born.
* He will be tall
* He will be fair complexioned
* His facial features will be similar to those of Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)
* His character will be exactly like that of Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)
* His father’s name will be Abdullah
* His mother’s name will be Aamina
* He will speak with a slight stutter and occasionally this stutter will frustrate him causing him to hit his hand upon his thigh.
* His age at the time of his emergence will be forty years
* He will receive Knowledge from Allah.
* At the time of his emergence Muslims will experience great suffering from non-Muslims and there will be great tribulations
*People will recognize him inMecca and will forcefully pledge their allegiance to him (will demand him to lead them).
*He will lead Muslims in a world-wide campaign against the forces of Dajjal (the False Messiah/aka Anti-Christ)
*He will be a normal human being with no special powers
*He will precede Jesus’ pbuh Second Coming and will be assisted by Jesus pbuh
*He will die.
Is Imam Mahdi the biblical Anti-Christ?
There is a book by Chris White who argues the same point I am making in his book: “The Islamic Antichrist Debunked.” You can find it on Amazon fairly cheap. Anyway, here is my humble take on this topic.
There is a book written by Joel Richardson called “The Islamic Antichrist.” I have not read this book (nor do I intend to), but have read reviews. It seems that the author wants his readers to believe that expected Imam Mahdi (the Guided One) is the Anti-Christ prophesized in the Holy Bible. Nothing is far from the truth.
But, before I disprove Mr. Richardson’s claim, let me tell you that Imam Mahdi and Dajjal (anti-Christ, the False Messiah) are not mentioned in the Holy Qur’an at all. Surprised? Well, it is a fact that no one can dispute. All the Islamic sources that talk about Dajjal (the Antichrist) and Imam Mahdi come from the collection of Hadiths (written traditions).
So, let me begin by explaining Muslim beliefs about Imam Mahdi. Shiite Muslims and Sunni Muslims have different beliefs about Imam Mahdi mainly because some of the hadiths (written traditions) they use are not the same. As a result, various sub-sects that came into being have different beliefs about Imam Mahdi as well. However, all Muslims do not consider Imam Mahdi to be Prophet to come. All Muslims believe that the Last Prophet of God was Muhammad. Also, Imam Mahdi is not believed to be the Messiah either. The only Messiah recognized by all Muslims is Prophet Jesus pbuh, the one promised to the House of Israel—and the one who is expected to come in his Second Coming. In a nut shell,
5 – The time of Fajr
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The time for Subh (Fajr) prayer lasts from the beginning of the pre-dawn so long as the sun has not yet started to rise. When the sun starts to rise then stop praying, for it rises between the two horns of the Shaytaan.”
The time for Fajr begins with the onset of the “second dawn” (al-fajr al-thaani) and ends when the sun starts to rise. The “second dawn” is the brightness that appears along the horizon in the east and extends north to south. The “first dawn” (al-fajr al-awwal) occurs approximately one hour before this, and there are differences between the two:
(1) In the “first dawn” the brightness extends from east to west, and in the “second dawn” it extends from north to south.
(2) The “first dawn” is followed by darkness, i.e., the brightness lasts for a short period then it becomes dark. The “second dawn” is not followed by darkness, rather the light increases.
(3) The “second dawn” is connected to the horizon, with no darkness between it and the horizon, whereas the “first dawn” is separated from the horizon with darkness between it and the horizon.
4 – The time of ‘Isha
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The time for ‘Isha’ lasts until midnight.”
So the time for ‘Isha’ begins immediately after the time for Maghrib ends (i.e., when the red afterglow disappears from the sky) until midnight.
Question: how do we calculate when midnight is?
Answer: if you want to calculate when midnight is, then calculate the time between sunset and the break of true dawn (when Fajr begins) then divide it in half; that halfway point is the end of the time for praying ‘Isha’ (and that is midnight).
So if the sun sets at 5 p.m., and Fajr begins at 5 a.m., then midnight is 11 p.m. If the sun sets at 5 p.m. and Fajr begins at 6 a.m., then midnight is 11.30 p.m., and so on.
2 – The time of ‘Asr
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The time for ‘Asr lasts until the sun turns yellow.”
We know that the time for ‘Asr begins when the time for Zuhr ends, i.e., when the length of an object’s shadow becomes equal to the length of the object itself. There are two times for the end of ‘Asr.
(1) The preferred time: this lasts from the beginning of the time for ‘Asr until the sun begins to turn yellow, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The time for ‘Asr lasts until the sun turns yellow.” Defining this time by the clock varies according to the season.
(2) The time of necessity. This lasts from the time the sun turns yellow until sunset, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever catches up with one rak’ah of ‘Asr before the sun sets has caught up with ‘Asr.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 579; Muslim, 608)
Question: what is meant by the time of necessity?
Necessity here refers to when a person is distracted from praying ‘Asr by some essential and unavoidable work, such as dressing wounds, and he is able to pray before the sun turns yellow but it is difficult, then he prays just before sunset. In this case he has prayed on time and has not sinned, because this is the time of necessity. If a person is forced to delay the prayer, there is no sin so long as he prays before the sun sets.
1 – The time of Zuhr
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The time for Zuhr is from when the sun has passed its zenith and a man’s shadow is equal in length to his height (this is the end time), until the time for ‘Asr comes.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) defined the start and the end of the time for Zuhr:
The start of the time for Zuhr is when the sun has passed its zenith i.e., has passed the highest part of the sky and started to descend towards the west.
Practical way of knowing when the zenith has been passed (and the time for Zuhr has begun):
Put a stick or pole in an open place. When the sun rises in the east, the shadow of this stick will fall towards the west. The higher the sun rises, the shorter the shadow will become. So long as it keeps growing shorter, the sun has not yet reached its zenith. The shadow will keep on growing shorter until it reaches a certain point, then it will start to increase, falling towards the east. When it increases by even a small amount, then the sun has passed its zenith. At that point the time for Zuhr has begun.
Knowing the time of the zenith by the clock: divide the time between sunrise and sunset in half, and that is the time of the zenith. If we assume that the sun rises at 6 a.m. and sets at 6 p.m., then the zenith is at 12 noon. If it rises at 7 a.m. and sets at 7 p.m., then the zenith is at 1 p.m., and so on.
See al-Sharh al-Mumti’, 2/96
The end of the time for Zuhr is when the shadow of everything is equal in length to the object itself, plus the length of the shadow of the object at the time of the zenith.
Practical way of knowing when the time for Zuhr has ended: go back to the stick or pole which we described above. Let us assume that its length is one meter. We will notice that before the sun reached its zenith, the shadow decreased gradually until it reached a certain point (make a mark at this point), then it started to increase, at which point the time for Zuhr began. The shadow will continue to increase, falling towards the east until the length of the shadow is equal to the length of the object itself, i.e., it will be one meter long, starting from the point marked at the zenith). As for the shadow before the mark, that is not counted, and it is called fay’ al-zawaal (the shadow of the zenith). At this point the time for Zuhr ends and the time for ‘Asr begins straight away.
In the closing verses of this Surah, Allah Taa’la mentions the quality of supplicating and repenting towards Allah.
Allah Taa’la mentions in another chapter of the Holy Qur’an in Surah Baqarah:
“Truly Allah loves those who turn unto him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves.”
In another verse of the Holy Qur’an, Allah Taa’la mentions in favour of those who repent:
“That those (angels) who bear the throne (of Allah) and those around it glorify the praises of their Lord, and believe in him, and ask forgiveness for those who believe (in the oneness of Allah) (saying): ‘Our Lord! You comprehend all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who repent and follow your way, and save them from the torment of the blazing fire!’
Our Lord! And make them enter the EdenParadise (everlasting garden) which you have promised them and to the righteous among their fathers, their wives and their offspring! Verily, you are the Almighty, the All Wise.
And save them from (the punishment for what they did of) the sins, and whomsoever you save from the sins (i.e pardon him) that day. Verily, you have taken him in mercy. And that is the supreme success.”
Our Prophet Muhammed May Allah send peace and blessings upon him has stated:
“Supplication is the essence of worship.”
This is due to two main reasons. First, by supplicating to Allah, a person fulfils his obligation of calling on Allah, which is understood from the verse,
“And your Lord says, ‘Call on me, I will answer you (your prayer).” (Qur’an, Chapter 24, Verse 60)
This is worship in its purest form. Secondly, by invoking Allah, one realizes that only He can fulfil ones needs. The servant who calls upon his Lord abandons hope in everything else and turns his full attention to Allah, humbling himself in front of him. This is the essence of worship. Another desired result of worship is to attain reward from Allah, because there is such great a reward in supplication; it has been called the essence of worship.
Being on the topic of supplication, I end this article by praying to Allah and begging him that he gives me the guidance and ability to act upon every single aspect of Islam, the perfect way of life. Ameen
Our Prophet May Allah send peace and blessings upon him mentioned the tongue first. There could be many reasons for this. One reason is that it is very easy to harm someone with the tongue. You could say something which that person may not like. The second reason is the harm caused by the tongue is usually more severe than the harm caused by the hand. A person finds it difficult to forgive someone who’s hurt their feelings more than someone who’s actually hurt them physically. The wound of the body caused by a sharp object may heal but the wound in the heart caused by the tongue may never heal.
When a person safeguards his hands and tongue, he becomes a true Muslim.
We need to save ourselves from becoming a source of harm for others, and we need to adopt those good attributes into our lives which the Prophet May Allah send peace and blessings upon him brought to us, and which the companions adopted into their lives, which was partly the reason for their success.
Our Prophet May Allah send peace and blessings upon him has said:
“The most perfect believer is the one with the best manners.”
The Prophet of Allah May Allah send peace and blessings upon him had the best characteristics and manners and through this, many non-Muslims converted to Islam just by looking at the actions of the Prophet May Allah send peace and blessings upon him.
Therefore, we learn that good manners and good character has a great impact on other lives also.
“Verily the believer because of his good character attains the stage of the fasting one and one who stands in prayer during the night.”
A part of good manners is caring and sharing. Most importantly with our neighbours and guests.
“That person will not enter paradise whose neighbour is not safe from his mischief.”
As to showing manners and being generous to our guests, our Prophet May Allah send peace and blessings upon him has said,
“Whosoever brings faith in Allah and on the Last Day should be generous to his guest.”
It is a great bounty that we have so many of our Prophets May Allah send peace and blessings upon him’s sayings in front of us which we can act upon. In the same way, we also have the noble Qur’an, the words of our master and The Creator: the words of Allah Taa’la.
Allah Taa’la says in the Qur’an:
And the servants of the All Compassionate One walk on the earth with humility and when the ignorant people speak to them they respond with peace offerings.
Allah Taa’la is mentioning the true servants of Allah and the special slaves who will be rewarded with the highest place in paradise.
I will now translate the rest of the verses and pray to Allah that he makes it easy for us to practice upon these verses and makes us the true slaves of Allah. Ameen
“And those who spend the night in worship of their Lord, prostrate and standing.
And those who say ‘Our Lord’! Avert from us the torment of Hell. Verily, its torment is ever an inseparable, permanent punishment.
Evil indeed it is as an abode and as a place to rest in.
And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor niggardly, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes).
And those who invoke not any other God along with Allah, nor kill such person as Allah has forbidden, except for just cause, nor commit illegal intercourse and whoever does this shall receive the punishment.
The torment will be doubled to him on the day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in disgrace.
Except those who repent and believe (in Islamic Monotheism), and righteous deeds, for those, Allah will change their sins into good deeds, and Allah is most forgiving, most merciful.
And whosoever repents and does righteous good deeds, then verily, he repents towards Allah with true repentance.
And those who do not bear witness to falsehood, and if they pass by some evil play or evil talk, they pass by it with dignity.
And those who, when they are reminded of the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations etc) of their Lord, fall not deaf and blind there at.
And those who say, ‘Our Lord!’ Bestow on us from our wives and our offspring the comfort of our eyes, and make us leaders of all the Muttaqun (the pious).
Those who will be rewarded with the highest place (in paradise) because of their patience. Therein they shall be met with greetings and the word of peace and respect.
Abiding therein, excellent it is as an abode, and as a place to rest in.
Say (O Muhammed Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam to the disbelievers): My Lord pays attention to you only because of your invocation to him. But now you have indeed denied (Him). So the torment will be yours forever (inseparable, permanent punishment).”
It has remained the way of Allah that whenever a nation was to become corrupt, Allah would send a Prophet from amongst them who would show them the right path. Allah Taa’la sent many messengers into this world and many Prophets. The last Messenger who was sent onto the face of this world is our beloved Prophet May Allah send peace and blessings upon him who was given the Qur’an. The Qur’an was given to the Prophet May Allah send peace and blessings upon him for an important reason: Guidance for Man and Jinn.
Allah Taa’la says in the Qur’an:
“This is the book in which there is no doubt, it is the guidance for those who fear Allah.”
So the Qur’an is a means of guidance for those who fear Allah. Who are the god-fearing? Allah Taa’la mentions in the Qur’an:
“Those who believe in the unseen and are steadfast in Salaah and spend out of what we have provided for them.”
Allah Taa’la has described a god-fearing person as one who possesses these three qualities which have been mentioned above. When a person possesses three such qualities, he will become a true and complete believer.
Having strong faith in the unseen plays a major role in the heart, this is called Imaan. Performing Salaah and spending from what Allah has provided is from the actions of a Muslim. When a person has firm belief in Allah and the unseen, and then goes on to perform good deeds, he becomes a true Muslim.
From the Qur’an and Hadith, I would like to mention as many qualities and attributes a Mu’min should possess as possible.
May Allah make it easy for you and bless you. Ameen
Allah Taa’la mentions in the Qur’an:
“Successful indeed are the believers.”
Allah Taa’la then continues and mentions those who are successful believers. He says:
“Those who offer their Salaah (prayers) with all solemnity and full submissiveness. And those who turn away from Laghw (dirty, false, evil vein talk, falsehood and all that Allah has forbidden).
And those who pay Zakaat.
And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). Except from their wives or (slaves) that their right hands possess, for them, they are free from blame.
But whoever seeks beyond that, those are the transgressors.
Those who are faithfully true to their amanat (all the duties which Allah has ordained, honesty, moral responsibility and trusts) and to their covenants.
And those who strictly guard their five compulsory congregational Salawat (prayer) (at their fixed hours).
These are indeed the inheritors who shall inherit the firdaus (paradise). They shall dwell therein forever.”
Allah Taa’la has mentioned Salaah (prayers) and Zakaat which is obligatory for a Muslim to perform. These qualities have already been mentioned previously.
Here Allah Taa’la also says,
“And those who turn away from Laghw.” (All that has been forbidden). (Vain Talk)
However, Allah Taa’la has made it cleat that a Mu’min (believer) is that person who refrains from sin. This is because when a person commits a sin he is either:
1) Engaged in other than the remembrance of Allah.
2) Is going against the order of Allah.
Many a time, it is better to stay quiet because one will save himself from sin, i.e backbiting, evil vain talk, falsehood etc.
Our beloved Prophet May Allah send peace and blessings upon him has stated,
“One who kept silent saves himself.”
However, there is a very important point that needs to be mentioned. When there is a gathering or a conversation in which one is backbiting, it is necessary that we stop this action, why? Because we have been ordered to prevent evil. However, in such circumstances where one does not stop backbiting, it will become necessary that one walks away from such gatherings or conversations.
In another Hadith, our Prophet Muhammed May Allah send peace and blessings upon him has said,
“Part of someone being a good Muslim is his leaving alone that which does not concern him.”
Allah Taa’la also mentions in the Qur’anic verses,
“And those who guard their chastity.” (i.e private parts from illegal sexual acts)
Allah Taa’la further mentions,
“Those who are faithfully true to their amanat and their covenant.”
An easy remedy for guarding ones chastity and to be faithful to ones amanat, his covenants and promises is to have the quality of Haya (modesty and shame).
When a person possesses such a quality, it will automatically stop him from committing such sins like adultery, theft and lies. He will think to himself that if tomorrow I am exposed, then what will people think of me?
Shame and modesty is such a vital article of Imaan that is why our Prophet Muhammed May Allah send peace and blessings upon him mentioned Haya (modesty) separately in this Hadith which is mentioned in Bukhari:
“Imaan is made up of 60 and 9 sectors and modesty is a sector of Imaan.”
With the grace of Allah, I have mentioned eight qualities of a Mu’min. I would now like to mention another Hadith which is narrated by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim:
“A true Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims stay safe.”
Muslims have often been persecuted and discriminated against. Early examples can be seen in Islamic history where Prophet Muhammad and his companions were mercilessly persecuted to the point where many lost their lives and families but did not give up Islam.
People to whom one of Allah's revelations was sent via the Prophets, this usually means the Jews and the Christians. The Jews were sent the original Zaboor (Psalms) revealed to Prophet Dawud (David - peace be upon him) and the original Towrat (Torah) revealed to Musa (Moses - peace be upon him). Over time the original revealed books were distorted, practices changed and the Message of God was lost and required renewal hence the Christians were sent the original Gospel revealed to Prophet I'sa ( Jesus - peace be upon him). The final and complete reveleation of His religion was sent to Prophet Muhammad in the form of the Quran.
Also referred to as: Ahle-Kitaab, Yahudi, Nasaara
Yahudi were those who continued to follow the Jewish faith despite being invited to the One God's religion by Prophet Isa Peace be upon him(Jesus - peace be upon him) and Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). They are classed as Kaafir for denying the Prophets that came to remind them.
Also referred to as: Jews, Bani Israeel (Children/Progeny of Jacob), Isrealites, People of the Book, Ahle-Kitaab
The Prophet and Abu Bakr, At the Feet of the Polytheists, A Trusted Friend
Anas ibn Malik (raa) reported that Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (raa) reported: I saw the feet of the polytheists very close to us as we were in the cave.
I said: Allah’s Messenger (saws), if one amongst them were to see at his feet he would have surely seen us.
There upon he said: Abu Bakr (raa), what can befall two who have Allah as the third One with them.
The Book Pertaining to the Merits of the Companions (Allah Be Pleased With Them) of the Holy Prophet (May Peace Be Upon Him) (Kitab Al-Fada’il Al-Sahabah)
Muslim :: Book 31 : Hadith 5868
Harming As-Siddiq, The Truthful One, A Forbidden Act
The Prophet (saws) disliked seeing acts of injustice being performed by anyone whether it be through physical action or through the tongue. He especially disliked any such act directed to his closest companion, the one who’s complete and continued unwavering support was declared after the events of the Miraculous Night Journey known as al-’Israa’ wal-Mi‘raaj (Night visit to Jerusalem and Ascension). It was after this event that he was given the name of As-Siddiq, the Truthful One (raa).
One day Umar ibn Al-Khattab (raa) had a disagreement with Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (raa) that resulted in words they both uttered with immediate regret. Abu Bakr (raa) quickly asked to be forgiven from the mighty Umar (raa), but forgiveness was refused.
Abu Bakr (raa) was one who considered even his smallest sins to be a terrible act and would become distraught over such actions. When he would commit any offense he would turn to the Messenger of Allah (saws) for guidance so that he may rectify his deed.
So to hasten his movements the father (Abu) of Bakr (raa) grabbed the sides of his garment and approached the Messenger of Allah (saws) who was sitting with Abu Ad-Dardaa and a number of the other sahaba (companions). The Prophet (saws) knowing As-Siddiq (raa) well could see the trouble on his face so he turned to those present and said, “Your companion has had an argument.”
Abu Bakr (raa) greeted the Prophet (saws) and conveyed the details of the disagreement and refusal of forgiveness from Umar (raa) to which the Prophet (saws) made du’a (supplication) three times, “May Allah forgive you, O Abu Bakr.”
Umar Ibn Al-Khataab (raa) also regretted the incident and quickly turned to make amends, but unfortunately sought Abu Bakr (raa) at his home only to find him away. It was at that moment that realization and fear struck Umar (raa) as to the whereabouts of Abu bakr (raa), the eminent companion of the Prophet (saws). It was at that moment that Umar (raa) realized he had chosen the wrong course. He knew Abu Bakr (raa) would be in the company of the Prophet (saws) and many of the other Sahaba (raa). So Umar (raa), filled with worry and shame turned slowly and walked to the sitting place of Allah’s Messenger (saws).
As Umar (raa) neared the Prophet’s (saws) gathering he saw the intense anger upon the face of the Messenger of Allah (saws), and approached Abu Bakr (raa) and those present in shame. Abu Bakr (raa) looked repeatedly between the Prophet (saws) and Umar (raa) until his guilt finally overwhelmed him. He felt great pity for Umar (raa) along with a feeling of deep regret for being the first to speak harshly, so he moved to make amends. Dropping to his knees before the Prophet (saws), Abu Bakr (raa) twice repeated, “O Allah’s Apostle! By Allah! I was more unjust to him than he to me.”
In his mercy the Prophet (saws) spoke not to Umar (raa), or Abu Bakr (raa), but to those present, “Allah sent me as a Prophet to you, the people, but you said to me, ‘You are telling a lie,’ while Abu Bakr said, ‘He has spoken the truth,’. He consoled and helped me with his self and his wealth. So for my sake, will you not give up harming my companion, will you not give up harming my companion?”
It was from that day on that harm never came to Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (raa) from the Sahaba again.
Companions of the Prophet – Bukhari :: Book 5 :: Volume 57 :: Hadith 13
Narrated Abu Ad-Dardaa (raa); While I was sitting with the Prophet (saws), Abu Bakr (raa) came, lifting up one corner of his garment uncovering his knee. The Prophet (saws) said, “Your companion has had a quarrel.”
Abu Bakr (raa) greeted (the Prophet (saws)) and said, “O Allah’s Apostle! There was something (i.e. quarrel) between me and the Son of Al-Khattab (raa). I talked to him harshly and then regretted that, and requested him to forgive me, but he refused. This is why I have come to you.”
The Prophet (saws) said thrice, “O Abu Bakr! May Allah forgive you.”
In the meanwhile, ‘Umar (raa) regretted (his refusal of Abu Bakr’s excuse) and went to Abu Bakr’s (raa) house and asked if Abu Bakr (raa) was there. They replied in the negative. So he came to the Prophet (saws) and greeted him, but signs of displeasure appeared on the face of the Prophet (saws) till Abu Bakr (raa) pitied (‘Umar), so he knelt and said twice, “O Allah’s Apostle! By Allah! I was more unjust to him (than he to me).”
The Prophet (saws) said, “Allah sent me (as a Prophet) to you (people) but you said (to me), ‘You are telling a lie,’ while Abu Bakr (raa) said, ‘He has said the truth,’ and consoled me with himself and his money.”
He (saws) then said twice, “Won’t you then give up harming my companion?” After that nobody harmed Abu Bakr (raa).
The Virtues of the Companions of the Prophet
Chapter 1: The virtues of the Companions of the Prophet (saws), and any Muslim who enjoyed the company of the Prophet (saws) or saw him, is regarded as one of his Companions (raa).
Narrated Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (raa) Allah’s Messenger (saws) said, “A time will come upon the people, when a group of people will fight a holy battle and it will be said, ‘Is there amongst you anyone who has enjoyed the company of Allah’s Messenger (saws)?’
They will say, ‘Yes.’ And so victory will be bestowed on them. Then a time will come upon the people when a group of people will fight a holy battle, and it will be said, ‘Is there amongst you anyone who has enjoyed the company of the Companions of Allah’s Messenger (saws)?’
They will say, ‘Yes.’ And so victory will be bestowed on them. Then a time will come upon the people when a group of people will fight a holy battle, and it will be said, ‘Is there amongst you anyone who has enjoyed the company of the companions of the Companions of Allah’s Messenger (saws)?’
They will say, ‘Yes.’ And victory will be bestowed on them.”
